Show Notes

Welcome back to the final episode of our Overcoming Overwhelm Special Series on the Live by Design Podcast!

Throughout this special series, we've delved into strategies to tackle overwhelm and feel empowered in our lives. Today, we're wrapping up with a grounding exercise designed to keep us present and centered.

According to Calm.com, the 54321 Method is "a grounding exercise designed to manage acute stress and reduce anxiety. [...] It leverages the power of your five senses—sight, touch, hearing, smell, and taste—to redirect your attention away from distressing thoughts and emotions. By focusing on sensory experiences, the method aims to ground you in the here and now."

Grounding Exercise: The 54321 Method

👀 5 Things You See: Notice and name five things in your surroundings
🖐️ 4 Things You Touch: Identify four physical objects you can touch
👂 3 Things You Hear: Tune in to three sounds around you
👃 2 Things You Smell: Engage your sense of smell and name two scents
👅 1 Thing You Taste: Find one thing you taste

This exercise is about mindfulness and presence. Whether you practice it daily for grounding or use it in moments of overwhelm, the 54321 Method brings you back to the present moment, reconnecting you with your senses.

Our journey in this series has focused on awareness, acceptance, action planning, and now, activation. Let's empower ourselves to live by design, embracing ease, abundance, and joy.

💗 These strategies can ease overwhelmed feelings. But it's important to note that many of the symptoms of overwhelm overlap with mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety. If life still feels relentlessly stressful after implementing changes, or if those changes feel impossible right now, please reach out to your healthcare provider.
