Susie and I were just catching up. I was telling her all about the new podcast and the shift that we've made. And actually, Susie, you're the very first person I've gotten to welcome officially onto the new show. So, woo! exciting. Congratulations. Thank you. Yes, I'm very excited to own her authority with you today. So as we get started, Susie, for anybody who's tuning in who maybe doesn't yet follow you online, know about your story and just the incredible work that you do. Can you tell us a little bit about who you are and what you're all about?
SPEAKER_01:My name is Susie. I am the founder of Cycle Sisters. I'm also the herbalist for it. We are a cycle-syncing herbal apothecary, which just means that we combine the practice of cycle-syncing, which is aligning your lifestyle with the four phases of the menstrual cycle, with the wisdom of herbal medicine. My journey... It kind of goes back about 15 years. I've been working in the health and wellness world, health food restaurants, natural medicine clinics, doing all kinds of roles. And my mentors and the inspiration for the work I do today were naturopathic doctors and traditional Chinese medicine doctors, acupuncturists. But what really led me to this work is more personal. I was looking for a solution to a problem I was having that I think so many women face. I was struggling with a lot of symptoms of hormonal imbalance, but I didn't even realize they were symptoms of hormonal imbalance. Basically, really bad PMS, PMDD really, so a severe form of that. Period pain that was debilitating, mood swings, weight gain, low libido, all the things. And I, like I said, I didn't realize that these were symptoms of hormone imbalance. I was so disconnected from my body And it was making it really hard to be in my power and to live my life on purpose. And that led to burnout and depression and anxiety, as it does for so many of us. And what was awful, too, is I was treating it wrong because I didn't know the root cause. Or like so many of us, I just accepted it as a normal part of being a woman. Everything shifted for me and where my focus has been for the last several years is tracking my cycle to which I was able to see patterns and those patterns through this amazing code that we all have as women, which is our menstrual cycles. I could see that this was in fact hormonal imbalance. And so with my background in holistic health and food, as well as my love for nature, I deep dived into hormone research and herbalism. And along with Dr. Brendan Witte, he's a naturopathic doctor and a hormone specialist I co-founded Cycle Sisters and through his guidance I was able to learn that the four menstrual cycles are key to support for the entire prevention of hormonal imbalance as well as PMS and painful periods but all the symptoms that come with it not just
SPEAKER_02:those
SPEAKER_01:and yeah so we created Cycle Sisters and our apothecary like I was saying we combine aligning your lifestyle with the four phases and herbal medicine and And now I'm just on a mission to help women reconnect with their cycles, to empower them to treat hormonal imbalance proactively rather than reactively, and to do that with cycle syncing and herbal medicine.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, I love that so much. There's so much about what you just said. You guys can't see me. I'm like jotting down notes furiously because I love this that, you know, the proactive approach, the reconnecting with self, you know, we can get so disconnected with ourselves just trying to survive the day to day. And, you know, we forget that like we inhabit this wonderful body and we get to be connected with it. And I just I love that you touched on, you know, getting to the root cause and that we don't just have to accept that. Oh, I'm just going to feel awful for these however many days every single month. Like that's, I'm 36 now. Like I still, there's still a while left of this. Like I don't just want to accept it. And that's actually how Susie and I got connected. We found each other through Instagram. I love the internet. It's like the coolest place ever. And I've had PMDD. So my like PMDD story is I, In college, I was on the pill and I think it actually helps with the PMDD, but you know, it comes with its all own host of issues. And once we, my husband and I got married, a couple of years later, we decided to start our family. And when my cycle started after having both of our boys, one right after the other, I started feeling like the way I described it to my doctor, I was like, I feel like a bear. Like I'm like this angry grizzly bear. I'm like an I don't want to be that person. And she was like, I think you have PMDD. And it was wild to me because up until that point, I never even heard of it. And I was like, what do you mean? I have this thing I've never even heard of. And she starts explaining it to me. And I'm like, yeah, no, that sounds a lot like how I'm feeling. And what I love about what you do, though, is you're taking this naturopathic type approach to treating the root cause and helping us I love that your approach is, you know, you really think about the whole cycle, the full month, and not just like the week when we're bleeding, the week when we have our period. So I'd love for you to kind of talk about that a little bit. Like, what does it mean to kind of live in sync with your cycle for anybody who like maybe isn't yet familiar with the different phases that we go through? And how does actually like acknowledging and tracking those, how does that help us like actually feel good as we move through our days?
SPEAKER_01:Totally. Great question. Yeah. So tracking our cycle, I think a lot of us look at it like, well, I just want to know when my period is so I can avoid going on vacation that week. Yeah. Right. Or as a form of birth control, which is awesome, too. There's so much more. It gives us clues into the overall picture of what's going on with us. And so I I, first of all, I want to acknowledge that tracking a cycle could seem like just like another thing we have to do in our lives. And that can be overwhelming. But I would argue that living hormonally in balance, which most women are, 85% of women suffer from PMS. And of that, 10%, I believe, are suffering from PMDD. So living not in alignment with our cycle and living hormonally in balance is actually a lot more overwhelming and time consuming. And so tracking really is key to living that optimal life. Let's kind of get into what's normal and what's not normal, like what we're looking out for when we're tracking our cycle. And by doing that, what you're really looking for is looking at each phase. So there's four phases. We got menstruation. That's what we're all familiar with. That's when we're bleeding, typically days one through five. What's normal in this phase is feeling a little low energy and having mild cramping. What's not normal is when cramps are so debilitating that you have to rely on painkillers or heating pads. Hello, I was totally there. I understand how that goes. or feeling so exhausted that you can't do anything. So if you're experiencing that, you might have hormonal imbalance. Then in the follicular phase, estrogen is gradually rising, you should feel a little more energetic, a little more confident, a little more happy, have a higher libido. If you're not experiencing those things, you might also have hormonal imbalance if you're still in that brain fog. Population days 11 through 13, estrogen is at its peak. So you should be feeling your best and definitely have a high libido, high creativity, high confidence. So if you're experiencing bloating or moodiness or cramping, that could be a sign in that phase of hormonal imbalance. And then in your phase, that is half the month, days 14 to 28, it is normal to feel a little lower energy or feel a little sadder. But when it's so debilitating that it's getting in the way of socialization and living your best life, that's a problem. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Absolutely. Oh, I love this so much. And the way you break it down is just so digestible and approachable. And, you know, I went through, I did a thing one month where I tracked every day and I just tracked like, what does my energy feel like? What does like, how does my body feel? How does my mind feel? And it was really interesting because as you're describing these, like I'm thinking back to when I did that exercise with myself and it was like, I would start to see like, oh yeah, like on day six, it was hilarious. Like I woke up and I was like, I'm going to put in a new bed in the garden, which is like actually a lot of physical labor to do. But I was like, I am woman, hear me, I can do anything today, right? But like a week earlier, I was like, nope, you know? And it's amazing how when you start to track these things, you start to see like, oh no, maybe I'm not feeling, maybe I'm not totally, you know, feeling depressed all the time. Maybe this is part of this cycle where I'm just a little bit lower energy, right? And it's not that I can't just, push myself harder to do it there's a reason I feel a little more tired I think that's so powerful
SPEAKER_01:it is and yeah it's so empowering to know like when now then you're going to live a cycle-sinking lifestyle, all that really is is giving yourself permission to rest when the cycle demands it and taking advantage of the benefits when the cycle is giving it to you, which is awesome because I think for me, I need permission. I like when my body says it's time to slow down and I can say, okay, I'm in my luteal phase. I'm not going to... Ask that person out on a date or ask for that raise right now or try this new project or this new workout class. It's time to just calm the mind and take it easy. And I think we all need that little permission. I
SPEAKER_00:know so many of us do, right? So many of us when we... We feel like our worth is tied to our productivity. So when we rest, we feel anxious, we feel guilty. And being able to give your own self permission to be like, no, actually, this is what my body needs. So my mind needs my heart needs. And I just feel so abundant. I just feel so good. Absolutely. Yeah. I love that.
UNKNOWN:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, yeah, for sure. And that's why I wanted to use herbal medicine in the same regard that to support that the different needs of each phase. Yeah, tremendously for me. I truly I don't I'm happy to report I really don't experience PMS or painful periods
SPEAKER_00:anymore. Yeah, that's incredible. And Susie was so sweet. And I've been starting to take it as well. It's been a little over a month. And I've even I know it takes even longer than that to really get fully into it, but I'm already starting to notice a difference, which for me is huge because my cramps used to be so uncomfortable, like not, not to the point where I couldn't do the things we had on our, our plan for the day, like on a weekend with my kids, right? Like I was still going to go to the park, but to the point though, where I'm like, Hey babe, will you drive so I can sit in the passenger seat and put on the heated seat and like Kind of curl up into a ball for a minute, you know, and to be able to just have that greater ease and movement and like lack of pain is huge. Huge
SPEAKER_01:and emotional pain. Like, yes, for me, that was my biggest symptom of pain. this hormonal imbalance and it really shined through the two weeks leading up to my period but like the emotional ups and downs and then yes the physical pain of a period as well it's not very fun but um and really what that equates to I I think we all need to understand is like if you're experiencing the two weeks leading up to your period that you're feeling down and struggling and then having a painful period that's most of the month so that's running so as opposed to ourselves, our higher selves running the show, which is where cycle thinking and herbal medicine can be so helpful for that foundation so we can live our best
SPEAKER_00:lives. I love that. And so what would you say to the woman who's listening to this, who's like nodding along and she's like, yeah, no, Susie, I feel yucky. Like for like when I'm ovulating and my little phase and my menstrual phase, like she only gets that like five day window, the follicular phase where she's like, I actually feel okay for five days out of the month. That's bonkers when we think about that. What do you say to the woman who just feels so demoralized? She's like, nope, it's always been like this. It will always be this way. I've never known anything different. What would you say to her to encourage her to try an herbal remedy and try this approach, which I think is really unique in terms of In terms of like giving ourselves goodness through your tinctures all month long and not just for like five or six days. Absolutely. I would say there
SPEAKER_01:is hope. And I would also say if you've tried herbs before and you felt like they didn't work, it's probably because you didn't take it every day of the cycle. A lot of herbal medicine works best when you're taking it every day. It's one of those things that builds up over time in the system and it's supporting like systems of the body, such as the endocrine system or the liver or the nervous system. And these things are going to happen overnight. So to stick with it and it does work. I would also say it's very empowering and anyone can start this today to live a cycle syncing lifestyle. I believe pairing it with herbal medicine is the secret sauce and it works amazing, but anyone can cycle sync today and start right now. And really all that comes down to is living a cycle syncing lifestyle. Like I was saying, taking advantage of the good parts of your cycle, so that follicular ovulation time, and then giving yourself permission to slow down during menstruation and luteal. It also means avoiding certain things throughout the month. Things like endocrine disrupting chemicals, which I think some of us are becoming more familiar with, but these are things like parabens and phthalates, and they can be in beauty products and cleaning supplies. Avoiding processed foods, avoiding plastics, avoiding alcohol smoking and excess caffeine. And of course, as we all know, these are things best to avoid for all kinds of things, not just because it's like annoying or hard or difficult to avoid certain things. One of our missions with cycle sisters is to provide alternatives that are actually life affirming. So for example, what I'm drinking right now is our coffee replacement. Instead of disrupting hormones, it's actually hormone supporting and And then besides that, and when I get into this cycle syncing protocol, I'm going to be referring to our flagship product quite a bit, which is our full cycle tincture four pack. This is a one month supply. This is what you've been taking. Make sure for each menstrual phase. So each tincture supports the unique needs of each phase. And they all work together with some of those same herbs in each one that are going to support those systems like I was talking about for the endocrine system, the liver, and the nervous system. And that's really going to prevent PMS and painful periods. So if you're wanting to live a cycle-syncing lifestyle, besides those things to avoid, like I just mentioned, in the menstruation phase. Give yourself permission to rest and restore. I say sleep 10 hours if you can. Obviously, that's not easy for all of us in our busy lives, but sleep as much as you can. Try not to take on too much. It's okay. Eat iron-rich foods like grass-fed red meat or organic lentils. And then next is follicular. And this phase is my favorite. We've This is when you started your garden bed. This is when, yeah, you should take advantage of how great you're feeling. So you can maybe ask for a raise or try something new. Next is ovulation. Again, you're also probably feeling amazing. Take advantage of it. Like I was saying, you can ask somebody out or try a new workout class. And then lastly is luteal. And this is half the month. And this is days 14 to 28. It is normal for energy to be dropping because estrogen and serotonin are both dropping here. So give yourself permission, again, to take it easy, not take on too much. And in each of these phases, you'll be taking the tinctures associated from the full cycle tincture four-pack. So for menstruation, you take the menstruation. Tincture, follicular, that tincture, ovulation, and so on.
SPEAKER_00:Amazing. Oh, I love that so much. I just, I feel so powerful to think about, like, to just reframe the conversation around our cycles, I think is the best way to put it, right? To take it from being this thing that it's like, oh, no, my period is coming, right? And to making it like, okay, no, this is like, I am a... I am living in this body and this body has cycles and it is normal for me to feel one way during one and another way during another. But I can help myself feel my best in each part of this cycle by doing this thing proactively. And I love how you talk about both proactive and how it's how with the herbal medicines, it's. Over time. Right. I think so often we're in this like immediate gratification world where it's like, well, I want to take the medicine and feel amazing in five minutes. Right. Like that's not how life works. Right. And so taking these things that, you know, take some time to allow them to build up in our system. So allow them to support us. It feels very sustainable. And I think that's what I really love about what you do, too, is it's so like you've used the words life affirming. I just think that's so beautiful. What is life affirming? Like if you had to describe it like. How would you define life affirming?
SPEAKER_01:I think that which what gives us vitality and makes us feel like ourselves.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah.
UNKNOWN:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:I love that so much. That's so beautiful. How are they feeling before they started, and how do they start to feel within two to three months of starting this kind of routine and this daily self-care practice? Totally. I
SPEAKER_01:think at first, I'm hearing a lot of women say that... That week, especially leading up to their period, they were feeling super depressed and anxious and felt like they couldn't accomplish tasks that they wanted to. And then when they would have their period, it's debilitating heating pads and like eight ibuprofen throughout the day. And because of that, they felt like what I've heard a lot is like they couldn't socialize a lot, a lot of isolation, a lot of not believing in themselves or wanting to take on new projects. Whereas now what I'm finding is this new sense of confidence I'm hearing a lot of. I'm hearing a lot of women talk about getting their libido back, which isn't just about sex drive, although it is, but it's also about just energy and vitality and feeling connected. So a lot women's relationships are improving, especially without all the mood swings, like just coming from a calmer sense,
SPEAKER_00:feeling more confident in work. I love that so much. And you know, in terms of this podcast, this idea of owning her authority, it feels like if we can really focus on our physical health and wellness, like all of our listeners know, I've been on a health journey the last like eight months of getting over a long COVID and just getting back to like a baseline of health that I'm like, okay, this feels good. Like it's very exciting. And it feels like if we want to own our authority, we want to step out into the world and create impact and change and lead with a confidence voice, if our body hurts so much of the month, if our emotional self hurts, if our mind is hurting, it's so hard to do that work. What connection do you see between caring for yourself well and being able to use your voice and own your authority? What does that mean to you?
SPEAKER_01:That's such a good question. It's really that foundational piece. I always say that Hormones question the idea of free will to me because they're out of whack, they are running the show and you feel out of control. So to really have that balance It just allows you to be in the driver's seat. And I really do believe that we're all here to be our 100% authentic self. I don't see why else our soul would have incarnated here. And so not to get all spiritual, but it's true. And so if your foundation is solid, you can carry out whatever mission you have. Our bodies and our minds shouldn't be something we're dragging along, not feeling well, they should be the vessel to help
SPEAKER_00:us carry out our mission. Oh, I love that so much. Yes, I think there's just so much good we can do in the world for ourselves, for our families, for others. And if we don't have that vitality, Everything is so much harder. I love this so much. So what would Susie be like your last piece of encouragement for the person who's listening? And she's like, okay, Susie, I'm interested. You've got me curious about cycle syncing. Like maybe she tracks her cycle, but she only tracks her period, not necessarily all four phases. Where should somebody start with this process? Like somebody who's like, okay, I feel seen, I feel heard, but where do I start? What would be your recommendation for that person? Totally. Start journaling.
SPEAKER_01:Journal things like mood, cravings, your sleep patterns, your relationships, how you're feeling about friends, partners, family, your motivation, your cognitive functioning, things like that. Not necessarily your weight, but like if you're noticing you gain weight at a certain time, track that and track
SPEAKER_00:bloating and digestion as well. Cool. And do you have a favorite app that you recommend people go to? Do you suggest like just grab one of the 40 unused journals in your office like I have behind me? What do you suggest? I like pen to paper. Me
SPEAKER_01:too. But also what you could do is get like a daily planner. That way you can see like the actual dates and kind of then you can really
SPEAKER_00:see the pattern because it's in a calendar. But there's something wonderful about being able to look back at past months and seeing your cycles, really, things that happen over and over again. You're like, oh, right, on this day, even with my PMDD, I'm still coming out of that. And so I still have one day a month where I'm like a little bit of that bear cycle. But it's so nice to be like, oh, no, I'm not crazy today. Like and it's not that the whole world sucks. It's just that it's this one day where things are a little bit harder. And like that used to be three days and now it's one day. So that's like we're moving the right direction. But having that information is knowledge. Like it's so true.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, yeah, absolutely. Because not being aware of it. we start labeling ourselves as things we are not like crazy or unlovable or these are not true. It's, it's just, yeah, the cycle. And also I would say too, for anyone listening, that's like, I'm just a monster. I love a bear. I'm going to totally adopt that. But yeah, To understand that we live in a pretty highly toxic world. So hormonal imbalance is much more common today than maybe it was 50 years ago. So to be easy on yourself and just to be aware of that and to also be empowered by that, we can make consumer choices to not have those chemicals as present in our life or plastics in our life.
SPEAKER_00:I love that. I went down the rabbit hole recently of learning how to reduce our plastic consumption. So you know, my kids, we all have like our bamboo toothbrushes now. And it's just like, yeah, right, those little shifts that you can do. And just like anything is, especially when it comes to plastics, I find like you can, you can go like what, like swing the pendulum swings away from one side to the other. But like anything, and like what we've been talking about today, it's just about these little changes over time. consistently executed where we can really start to see those shifts and even getting more intentional with the cleaning products that we use and all that kind of stuff. That's been part of this journey of me getting healthy in the last year. I was realizing there's probably some stuff around me that's not helping, right? And how can we just be more proactive and intentional, which is so much of what I hear In what you do. So Susie, for somebody who's listening and they're like, okay, I'm in like, get me some tinctures. How do we do this? Can you tell them where to start, where to go, what they, what they should get, like all the details. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_01:So I had mentioned earlier that full cycle tincture four pack, this is this great foundational piece that's going to prevent PMS, painful periods, but it does take about six to eight weeks for your endocrine system to catch up and balance. This is very common with root cause care, it does take time. I realized this, so I created a hormone reset starter kit. So it has two months of that four pack, but it Also has a free gift to you. So it's three free tinctures that are fast acting to support you in that two month period. One helps fast acting for period cramps and other period discomforts like digestive issues, for example, or bloating. Another one, my personal favorite is the calm cycle. It helps with anxiety and irritability and mood swings. And it's super fast acting like five minutes. That's
SPEAKER_00:amazing. That's what I do when I'm a bear. I will be
SPEAKER_01:taking that. Yeah, it's great. And then the last is our, it's called Lunar Lullaby. It's our sleep tincture. There is magnesium in it.
