Hi, thanks for having me. Hello, everybody. Thank you so much for being here. So Susie, for anyone who's hopping on and they don't know who you are, can you just tell us like a little bit about yourself?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. I'm Susie. I'm the founder of Cycle Sisters Apothecary. I made this apothecary for women like myself. I suffered for years from PMDD, which is just a form of severe PMS. So really bad mood swings. And then my period would follow and it was like really intense cramps. And I'm sure a lot of you listening can relate to this. And I just really wanted to create a solution that worked. And that was natural. I think I think there's a lot of synthetic versions out there. There's a lot of women are in hormonal birth control and that can cause its own set of issues. So I really wanted to create something natural and life-affirming that was not only going to solve the PMS and the period cramp problem, but also really tackle the root cause, which is hormonal imbalance, which affects so many other things too, like metabolism and skin and libido. So I created Cycle Sisters Apothecary with a naturopathic doctor. I'm an herbalist and an entrepreneur. So Susie, what like, so you know we're part part of this community is about owning her authority and I would love to know maybe just a little bit about like what has that been like for you like stepping into this role of entrepreneur really stepping into you know what it is that you do with your business and the women that you're helping what does that kind of felt like for you personally like the empowerment that you get to share with others through the work that you do oh my god it's
SPEAKER_01:It's been so amazing. I've always wanted to be an entrepreneur and I always wanted to do something that was really going to help people and I've always been drawn to natural medicine. So for me personally, this has been incredible. With the products themselves, it's helped me step into my authority because, you know, 85% of women experience PMS. Of that, 10% are experiencing PMDD. 80% of women are experiencing period cramps. Of that, 10% are experiencing severe cramps. And what that equates to is more than half the month, we're feeling like we can't own our authority and step into our power as women. And that foundational piece is so important. So it's been so rewarding to, one, firsthand experience it and be able to, I don't think I could have started this business if I didn't take care of this first. And now I get to share that with others. And living that intentional life and really, yeah, just like owning your authority, being in your power is... Amazing. And so, yeah, it's been really great.
SPEAKER_00:I love that. And well, what I love about your approach too, because I come from a holistic health coaching background, being a yoga teacher and just living in that world for so long before I became a podcaster, I love any kind of approach that's proactive instead of reactive, right? Because so many times it's like we have a symptom, we react to it and we treat the symptom. But I love what you're doing is really treating more of the root cause of the hormonal imbalances. And I just think that that's so beautiful and that you, that you approach our full cycle, right? It's not just this focus on, you know, the week when we have cramps or the week that we feel like I, I, when we did our podcast episode, I said, I have a few days where I feel like a bear, right? Like I love this approach of let's, yeah, like let's approve, like approach the whole self. Where did that, where did that come from? Like, was that something that you kind of came up with or was it with your co-collaborator where you're like, wait, let's, let's look at the full cycle. Like, where did that come from?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. Such a good question. It definitely was by the guidance of my co-creator for the company. He's a naturopathic doctor who specializes in hormones. And we wanted to use herbal medicine because the earth is amazing and it provides these incredible plants that give us medicine. I'm so sorry. This is hilarious right now, but my cat is using the litter box
SPEAKER_00:and you can probably hear it. That's okay. My son is homesick and he's watching YouTube in the other room and I'm like, you guys might hear a little bit of Minecraft happening in the background and that's just life.
SPEAKER_01:That is just life. Thank you for understanding. Oh, that's so funny. The reason we decided to really focus on the four phases of the menstrual cycle really point blank is the cycle is not just a period. The cycle is every day. It's the whole month. We are impacted by it all. And when you're using herbal medicine and these natural modalities Most of them work when you take them every day. So if you're just focusing on when the symptoms are striking, they're probably not going to be very effective. I actually was in the camp for the longest time where I tried herbal medicine and I felt like it didn't work. And it's because I didn't understand the herbal medicine. I didn't understand that some medicine takes, you have to take it every day. Some is more, so that's like preventative and root cause targeting. And some of the medicine is more symptom targeting. So you're going to take it when you're feeling these issues. And so we wanted to take that work out of the way for the people trying our products. We wanted to kind of put the right herbs with the right phases and just have that work done for you. So all you can do is start feeling better.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, and it's amazing. and very permission giving in a way of being like, no, it's okay to rest right now. Like this is part of my cycle where I need to rest and I'm going to enjoy this romantic fantasy book on my couch and just, you know, enjoy the quiet.
SPEAKER_01:Absolutely. And it makes so much sense if you think about it. Like we have four phases throughout the month. We have menstruation, follicular ovulation and luteal. And it's like, it's living in alignment with them makes as much sense as living in alignment with the four seasons. Like you wouldn't go outside in the middle of winter in a bikini because it wouldn't be optimal or comfortable. And so it's the same thing. And it is amazing. Like I love the permission it gives us to rest. I really took advantage of that this last month. I'm sure a lot of your listeners can relate to the burnout of like perfectionism and working really hard. And as an entrepreneur, you know, I could get in such a tunnel vision where I forget to rest and like take my own advice. And there's a cost to that. So this past month during my luteal phase, I pretty much like, I still worked, but I chilled out for a couple of weeks. Like I didn't put as much on my plate and it was so rewarding because then once you enter the follicular and ovulation phase, when your body is, primed for creativity and energy, you can get so much more done as opposed to just trying to do it all the whole time.
SPEAKER_00:Exactly. Because there have definitely been times that I felt like I'm just like hitting a brick wall and I'm like, why am I trying to force this when this isn't the right week for this, right? And so, yeah, I think it's open mission, right? And I think a lot of us maybe, speaking for myself at least, didn't necessarily grow up with female role models that that felt comfortable resting, right? That felt like they always had to perform and that gets passed on to us, right? The perfectionism you mentioned, the people pleasing, like the tying of our self-worth to our productivity. And so being able to like sync with your cycle gives you that permission to be like, no, it's okay. Like I don't have to do something productive right now. I can literally like the productive thing I'm doing is allowing my body to rest. That's so beautiful.
UNKNOWN:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:Totally. And even like, I feel like as women, like that just reminded me, I was raised by a single mom who was just like moving around, go, go, go all the time as well. Never gave herself permission to rest. But also like, I'm remembering like the insecurities women feel like in their bodies when they're on their cycles. Like it's normal and okay to be bloated a little bit for like a week of each month and like to be like, okay with that. And to just, So like being aware of the four phases and what phase you're in is so good for so many reasons, but that's one of them. Like just to be easy on yourself sometimes. Yes.
SPEAKER_00:Yes. We can be so hard on ourselves. My husband and I were just talking about this in a slightly different vein in that we're both, I'm coming out of having had long COVID. So I'm really leaning back into like physical activity. I've got sleep down to a science, but you know, I'm using my cycle sister's apothecary. I'm cycle syncing and I'm getting back into movement. And he's also like kind of restart a workout routine. And we were talking about like, how important it is to feel good in the body you're in right now. And so we're like, let's go get some workout clothes that fit the bodies we're in right now. And I find like, I teach a lot on keystone habits and how if you have this one keystone habit, it's kind of like the biggest domino. Oh, it's so beautiful. So Susie, for anybody who's tuning into this and maybe they just feel a little hesitant, they're like, I've never taken in like an herbal tincture before. I've never, like, I've never explored herbalism. What would be like the word of encouragement you would give to that person that you're like, oh no, like girl, this is it. What would you tell to her? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:I would say, well, one, it works. So if you're looking for a solution that actually works, it does. If you're taking it correctly and if you're taking it at the right dosage, which is the main thing we've been trying to do with our products. I would also say, like, if you're nervous about the taste, like, how do I use a tincture? Like, there's many ways to do it. I could show you right now if you'd like. Yeah, absolutely. Because I haven't taken mine yet today.
SPEAKER_00:That's great. And not everyone's as lucky as me and has, like, you to email to tell, like, oh, put it in your tea or do this or that, you know? So this is amazing, yes. You can spill all the tea.
SPEAKER_01:Yes, although I am always available if you want to, like, DM me or even email me i am here to help anybody that would like some uh encouragement or a guidance um so essentially an herbal tincture all it is it's a bunch of dried herbs that the medicine has been extracted with a solvent we use vodka that's what's typically used um and then it's strained and then it's just like a liquid i'll show you it's just like like a liquid um and then Some people like the taste. I personally love the taste. I think after a while, a lot of my friends and me that are more seasoned with herbal medicine, we like the taste because we know it. what the results are. Yes. But a lot of people, it's like a little off-putting at first. It tastes like medicine, right? Like remember when you were a kid and you had to take like liquid medicine? Sometimes it could taste like that. So a lot of people that take my products, they mix it in with their coffee, which masks the taste. You're not going to taste it, especially if you do like creamer. I personally just like to add it to water. So a dose is three milliliters. You'll see here there's on my newer products that I just put out. I actually have the measurements and that's how it's going to be from now on. I'll show you. I don't know if you can see it. Yeah. But you take three milliliters. You could take it three times a day or you could really all you need to do is take nine milliliters a day. So you can take six in the morning or six at night and then three in the morning, three at night if you don't want to like remember to have to take that middle dose. So this is one, two, three, And then I like to personally add it to a little water, just like that, and then that's it. Love it! Yeah, but you can just go directly to your mouth, too. I've added some vanilla and some vegetable glycerin to my products, so each of them are cut so they're not, like, so intense with the vodka salt.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, I actually really like the flavor of them, too. Like, I'm not super experienced in herbal medicine, but I love the taste of, like... Yeah. I also like it in water. I think it's just like, I mean, I always have a water bottle with me. So my, my thing is that when I get, I drink my first one in the morning and when I get down to like the bottom, like bottom, like quarter, then I put in my drops and then I'm just like, okay. And that's like my mental way of remembering it. Like it's that little habit hack, right. Of like cue action reward. And so my cue is like, I'm going to be under my first water bottle. The action is the drops. And then the reward is like, I got to feel good.
UNKNOWN:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:So smart. I love that. That's awesome. There's other ways to take herbal medicine too, though. We are eventually going to be working on some skincare products and some salves and things like that. Amazing. Another product we have is our, this is my favorite. This is the Moonrise Morning. It's a coffee replacement. The reason we made a coffee replacement is caffeine coffee can really impact PMS and period pain because it impacts our hormones and it also exasperates symptoms of PMS like anxiety. So we wanted to create something that tasted good, kind of tasted like coffee. This tastes somewhat like, if I had to, like somebody recently left a review and they said it kind of tastes like a dirty chai which is so true yeah it's yummy and the reason that there's like cinnamon in here and ginger there's actual vanilla bean in there like real vanilla beans and yeah and some maple syrup granules it's all organic but there's some rhodiola and damiana in here which are both going to uplift mood they literally modulate serotonin and dopamine so you're going to feel better more awake so it's going to give you that energy without the jitters and the anxiety and the hormone disruption of coffee. So this is what I also add my pictures to. But it's been a game changer for so many things. Like getting off coffee, there's all kinds of reasons why we do it. But if it's going to help our cramps and period and PMS and things like that, it's really helpful as well.
SPEAKER_00:Yes, you're going to make me laugh. Like your newest convert away from coffee, Susie. Like I definitely drink more coffee than I should. And so I'm like, if I could replace an afternoon cup of coffee with something much healthier, that would be so good. I'll have to send you
SPEAKER_01:some. Oh, yeah. And then the reason I brought this up is because this is not a tincture. This is powder. I forgot to bring a spoon over, but you might be able to see. You just do one tablespoon in hot water and mix. And you can add cream and sugar if you'd like. or have it on its own and that's it. You don't have to strain it or anything. At the end, there might be a little sediment, but some people toss it. I like to just take it because there's such good things in there for everything, all kinds of like cognitive function, circulation, blood sugar regulation, digestion. It's all good things.
SPEAKER_00:I love it. That's so much. We're always trying to teach our kids like what is healthy for them in specifically vegetables and fruit that they eat. Cause you know, they're little. So they're like, I just want to eat chicken nuggets all the time. We're like, that's great. But also, and so we're always asking our, I'll say Schmalexa. So nobody's like start talking in the background and we'll be like, tell us the benefits of broccoli. Right. And it'll list off all these things. And I feel like herbal medicine is the same way where you're like, what are like the benefits of X, Y, and Z? And it's just like, it helps with your blood. It your blood sugar regulation.
